Feedering concept started with the advent of containerization which revolutionerised sea transportation Containerization was based on the "hub" & "spoke" concept with Main Line mother vessels calling few major ports (incl hub ports) and cargoes are "feedered" by smaller feeder vessels to and from outports (which are usually affected by berth/equipment and draftlimitations).
With Main Line mother vessels size increasing from around 1500-1600 teus in 1972 to 8500 teus today and 10,000 teus vessels of tomorrow, the feedering concept is even more important as the larger mega sized mother vessels will not have time to call outports as theseoutports have even more limitations to handle such large vessels with deeper drafts.
In the context of the market which ACL trades in S.E. Asia/West Asia(Indian Sub Continent) the major hub ports will be SINGAPORE , PORT KELANG and COLOMBO.
