Eastern Maritime started as a shipping agency since its establishment in September 1971 at a small shophouse in Siphya Road, Bangrak District, Bangkok when Y.C. Chang, a founder and a Chairman of Singapore base Pacific International Lines (PIL), established a join venture with local Thai partners. The Company then had seven staff members and a capital of one million Baht. In those early years, business was restricted to shipping agency providing husbandry service for coastal break-bulk conventional vessels at Klong Toey port only.
Since 1981, EML had switched from being a bulk service operator to container trades, the agency also undertook a major route expansion. The company has over the years kept full pace with the strong growth of maritime business in Southeast Asia. It has diversified into related businesses with investment in freight forwarding, NVOCC, customs clearance, land haulage, container depot and warehousing and supply chain management. EML’s strategic partners are Transport Management, Erawan Multimodal Services, Singamas Thai Logistics and BMT Pacific. With large expansion in landside operations, EML moved to its own office in Rama IV Road where the present premise lies.
With this growth in business development to more than twenty t imes its original capital investment, the Company’s staff strength has also expanded with employment of 130 personnel and this excludes those in subsidiaries and associated companies. Investment continues to be made in information technology which has enabled EML to be amongst the best of shipping agency companies in Bangkok. Our human resource development has ensured our staff members are IT trained and that they have rewarding careers in the Company. From handling a few thousand tons of conventional cargoes, EML today manages over 150,000 teus per annum. For this achievement, we are indebted to all our customers, port and custom authorities and our business associates.
